On display at the Ottoman Baths, Chios Castle

Invited by DEO Projects, Chios, Greece to produce site specific works on the island, Nasser spent week on the island and exploring its vast history and agriculture. In these works she shifts focus on the mastic trade that shaped the Chios ever shifting histories of migration. Fabrics dyed with lapis lazuli used in Eastern Orthodox iconography, limestone powder, and ash, with charcoal rubbings of different mastic tree barks. Commonly known as the “tears of Chios” mastic is traditionally and historically produced solely on the Island. Mastic has been harvested for 2,500 years, even shaping the architecture of the Chios villages, with high fortress walls protecting their secrets of cultivation inside.

Produced with the support of DEO Projects.
